Millions of AR15 and M16 rifles have been made with the direct gas impingement system. However, the direct gas impingement systems has always had one criticism that is it dumps hot gases and carbon fouling back into the receiver where the critical moving parts are housed. In contrast, the short-stroke piston system vents those hot gases and carbon fouling forward over the gas block located on the barrel after using the gases to drive a piston which in turn pushes the bolt carrier. This results in a cleaner operating system that requires less maintenance.
There are several manufacturers of AR / M16 rifle base has started to offer their Complete Rifle or Upper Receiver Assembly conversion equipped with short stroke piston system rifles. Several manufacturer offers drop in short stroke piston system.
